FORT ST.GEORGE

A symbol of the British Raj and amidst the state offices, it is located in the eastern part of the city just south of George Town. The fort was built around 1653 by the east India Company. It is a fine example of 17th century British military architecture. There are a number of buildings worth a visit in the Fort. The Old Government House, the Banqueting Hall built by Goldingham for the Governor’s official entertainment during the Clive period.

The foundations of Indian Army and Civil Service, the land survey by Colin Mackenzie, and the archaeological, botanical and zoological surveys were all laid at Fort. The Fort has a fascinating museum.
